for some constant C. We may want to colour every vertex uniformly at random. Then we will get m21−k many monochromatic edges in expectation. An improvement upon the basic method can be obtained by randomly recolouring all monochromatic edges after the first randomization. In a 1978 proof, Beck used this argument to show that m(k) ≥ Ω(k2). In 2000, Radhakrishnan and Srinivasan improved it to m(k) ≥ Ω((k/ log k)2). Their main idea is that the recolouring obeys some random ordering, and when we are about to recolour an edge, it may not be monochromatic any longer, and thus we do not need to recolour every monochromatic edge. Cherkashin and Kozik (2015) found a simpler proof based on a random greedy colouring, which implicitly used the recolouring idea. We will present that proof here.

Combined l1 and greedy l0 penalized least squares for linear model selection

We introduce a computationally effective algorithm for a linear model selection consisting of three steps: screening–ordering–selection (SOS). Screening of predictors is based on the thresholded Lasso that is `1 penalized least squares. The screened predictors are then fitted using least squares (LS) and ordered with respect to their |t| statistics. Finally, a model is selected using greedy gen...

Structure Learning with Nonparametric Decomposable Models

We present a novel approach to structure learning for graphical models. By using nonparametric estimates to model clique densities in decomposable models, both discrete and continuous distributions can be handled in a unified framework. Also, consistency of the underlying probabilistic model is guaranteed. Model selection is based on predictive assessment, with efficient algorithms that allow f...

A Single Supplier Procurement Model With Random Yield

In this paper, we develop a procedure for selecting a supplier. Suppliers are characterized by their lead time, price and quality (random yield). Each purchased item is acceptable with a given probability and independent of the others. We assume the demands are deterministic with no set-up cost and backordering is allowed. For each supplier, an optimal ordering policy is developed. We prove the...

Static and Dynamic Feature Selection in Morphosyntactic Analyzers

We study the use of greedy feature selection methods for morphosyntactic tagging under a number of different conditions. We compare a static ordering of features to a dynamic ordering based on mutual information statistics, and we apply the techniques to standalone taggers as well as joint systems for tagging and parsing. Experiments on five languages show that feature selection can result in m...
